  • Petroleum Consultants | Uganda Set to Conduct Exploration in 2 New Oil Regions

Early results indicate 6.5 billion BOEs  in proven reserves Uganda is taking steps to expand its oil exploration efforts into two new regions, aiming to bolster its proven reserves of 6.5 billion barrels. The country's energy minister, Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu, recently shared this development during a press conference in Kampala. New Exploration Areas: Moroto-Kadam and Kyoga Basins The Ugandan Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development has initiated preliminary petroleum exploration studies in the Moroto-Kadam Basin, located in the northern part of the country, as well as the Kyoga Basin in the northeast. According to Minister Nankabirwa, early findings suggest the potential for commercial oil and gas reserves, particularly in the Moroto-Kadam Basin. This discovery could mark a significant milestone in Uganda’s ongoing efforts to enhance its energy resources. Current State of the Albertine Graben Basin Uganda's journey into the oil industry began nearly two decades ago with the discovery of commercial crude oil in the Albertine Graben basin, situated in the western part of the country near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Despite the early discovery, commercial oil production has been delayed and is now expected to commence next year. The Albertine Graben has proven to be Uganda's most promising hydrocarbon basin, with two major fields—Tilenga and Kingfisher—leading the way. These fields are primarily operated by TotalEnergies, which holds a 56.7% stake, while China’s CNOOC and the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) hold the remaining shares. However, progress in the Albertine Graben has faced challenges, including disagreements over field development strategies, taxation issues, and the lack of necessary infrastructure and funding. To date, only 72 of the planned 457 wells have been drilled in the Tilenga and Kingfisher fields. Uganda set to conduct Exploration in 2 new Oil Regions Future Prospects and Investments Minister Nankabirwa also highlighted the ongoing efforts to secure funding for the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP). The Ugandan government is awaiting a decision from Chinese financial institutions, including the Export-Import Bank of China (EXIM) and China Export & Credit Insurance Corporation (Sinosure), on whether they will provide the necessary credit for this ambitious project. The EACOP is expected to play a crucial role in transporting Uganda’s crude oil to international markets. As Uganda continues to explore new regions for oil and gas, the country is positioning itself to become a significant player in the East African energy market. The success of these explorations could lead to increased production capacity, new investment opportunities, and strengthened economic growth. • Engineering Services | Gran Tierra Makes Significant Oil Discoveries in Ecuador

Gran Tierra Energy Inc. has made another major oil discovery, this time at the Charapa-B6 well located on the Charapa Block in Ecuador. This discovery follows the recent successes at the Arawana-J1 and Bocachico Norte-J1 wells on the Chanangue Block, highlighting the significant potential of this promising region. Exploration Success in the Charapa Block Gran Tierra has successfully drilled and tested the Charapa-B6 well, cementing its status as a key player in Ecuador's oil exploration scene. The company has completed the production casing and perforated the Hollin oil zone, which spans 50 feet, with 45 feet identified as reservoir pay. Production testing is now underway, and early signs point to a productive well. This marks the first exploration in the Charapa Block since the Charapa-B5 well was drilled in 2022. To date, the Charapa-B5 well has yielded over 280,000 barrels of oil, reinforcing the potential of this block. Gran Tierra has already moved its rig to drill the Charapa-B7 exploration well, which was spud on August 9, 2024. Gary Guidry, Gran Tierra’s President and CEO, expressed optimism about the future, stating, “The Charapa-B6 well represents our third oil discovery in 2024 and our fifth in Ecuador since resuming exploration post-pandemic. These discoveries highlight our team's expertise and the effectiveness of our near-field exploration strategy in Ecuador.” Equador Oil Discoveries Strong Results Across Multiple Wells Gran Tierra’s recent string of successes in Ecuador is a testament to the company's robust exploration strategy. With five successful exploration wells drilled in the country, the company has consistently discovered oil, particularly medium to light hydrocarbons from various geological zones. This underlines the untapped potential within the Oriente and Putumayo basins, where Gran Tierra continues to focus its efforts. Last week, Gran Tierra also reported a discovery at the Bocachico Norte-J1 well. The company has completed production casing and perforation in the T-Sand oil zone and is initiating production testing. This positive result strengthens confidence in the multi-zone potential of the Zabaleta well, which is scheduled for drilling in late 2024. Arawana, another field in the region, continues to deliver strong performance, producing over 900 barrels of oil per day from the Basal Tena zone. With cumulative production reaching approximately 74,000 barrels, Gran Tierra plans to enhance operations by upgrading the artificial lift system from a jet pump to an electrical submersible pump in the third quarter of 2024. Guidry emphasized the importance of these developments, noting, “These discoveries showcase our deep technical expertise and strategic land positioning in the Oriente/Putumayo basin. Combining production from multiple zones enhances our operational flexibility and strengthens our economic outlook. We anticipate that these fields and the Arawana field will drive production growth, reserve additions, and free cash flow for years to come.” Gran Tierra’s ongoing success in Ecuador highlights the company’s commitment to unlocking the potential of the region. As exploration continues, the company is well-positioned to capitalize on the opportunities within the Charapa and Chanangue Blocks, further solidifying its role as a leader in the Latin American oil and gas sector. • Weekly Rig Count Overview: U.S. Down, Canada Surges | Oil & Gas Staffing

The latest Baker Hughes Rig Count shows a notable shift in drilling activity across the U.S., Canada, and international markets. While the U.S. rig count has seen a slight dip, Canada is experiencing a significant surge, and international operations remain relatively stable with minor fluctuations. Let’s take a closer look at the numbers and what they mean for the energy sector. U.S. Rig Count: A Continued Decline As of the most recent update, the U.S. rig count has dropped by one, leaving the total at 632 rigs. This marks a year-over-year decline of 50 rigs. The downward trend reflects the ongoing challenges in the U.S. energy market, driven by fluctuating commodity prices, regulatory pressures, and shifting priorities toward renewable energy. Although the decrease is modest this week, the larger year-over-year trend is worth noting. It signifies a potential slowing of domestic drilling activity, which could impact supply levels shortly, especially as demand fluctuates across global markets. Canada: A Surge in Activity In contrast, Canada has seen a dramatic increase, with the rig count jumping by 38, bringing the total to 182 active rigs. While the year-over-year count remains unchanged, this weekly surge could indicate a seasonal uptick in drilling or an increased focus on specific projects aimed at boosting production. Canada’s energy market, particularly in oil sands and natural gas production, continues to play a critical role in the global supply chain. The recent surge could be a response to rising demand in both domestic and international markets as energy consumption increases post-pandemic. International Rig Count: Slight Decrease but Stable The international rig count has decreased slightly by 21 rigs, bringing the total to 952. Despite this, the year-over-year decrease is minimal, with just a three-rig decline compared to this time last year. The relative stability in the international market suggests that global drilling activity is holding steady, even as regional shifts occur. International markets, especially in the Middle East and Asia, continue to lead the way in oil and gas production, contributing to the world’s energy needs. This stability is crucial for maintaining the balance between supply and demand as other regions, such as the U.S., experience more pronounced shifts. Weekly Rig Count What This Means for the Industry The rig count is a key indicator of activity in the oil and gas industry. While the U.S. shows a continued decline, Canada’s surge may help offset some of the slowdown in North America. Internationally, the market appears to be steady, maintaining a crucial role in global energy production. As these trends develop, companies across the sector must remain adaptable. Changes in drilling activity can affect everything from supply chains to staffing needs, and staying ahead of these shifts will be essential for success. Aries One's Oil & Gas Staffing Services At Aries One, we offer a range of consulting services tailored to meet the needs of energy companies navigating these fluctuating markets.
